How to Claim a Discretionary Housing Payment

You can only apply for a discretionary housing payment if you are able to claim housing benefit or council tax benefit. If you are not eligible to claim these benefits you are unable to be considered for a DHP.

Who can claim for Discretionary Housing Payment?

You can only apply for a discretionary housing payment if you are able to claim housing benefit or council tax benefit. If you are not eligible to claim these benefits you are unable to be considered for a DHP. You might be a single parent, an individual with no dependants, or a family. As, long as you’re able to claim for housing benefit or council tax benefit you are able to apply for a DHP.

The claims process, How to claim?

You may be able to claim a discretionary housing payment in several ways. This will depend on your local council as some will have different ways to claim than others. For example, you may be able to apply over the telephone, in your local neighbourhood office. It is common that an application form will need to be completed so that your need for a DHP can be assessed on your full circumstance.
